This is my review of Liv’s episode!
Let me know what you think.
First of all I want to commend Laya Lewis for a wonderful performance. Everyone that had a part in this episode did fantastic with it. This episode gave me so many emotions and I cannot wait for you to read it.
Liv this entire series has been drinking, fucking, and clinging onto Alex for dear life in order to escape the reality of losing Grace. She physically looks ill and she is seeing Grace at random times. Proof that she has not dealt with the death in a healthy way. Grace always seems to show up when characters have a hard time accepting what happens. So far she has visited Rich (her love), Franky (the person being chased), and Liv (the person who could have died if Grace was not in the car.) When I say visited I mean visited their minds, because the characters needed her to show up. Grace is not a ghost she is in their subconscious part of their surreal reality. In the midst of all this psychological turmoil and defenses her rock, Alex, decides to leave for a weekend. This forces Liv to see her world for what it is—absolutely fucked.
Personally, one of my main criticisms is that the portrayal of the dynamic between Franky / Liv / Mini is getting old. How many times has Mini come close to telling anyone about anything only to pull herself back last minute. It has happened for a few episodes now and I feel that it is getting tiresome. Though i understand the reasons behind her secrecy and reluctance to tell people…it has simply gone on too long. Franky and Liv also act extremely mean toward one another. Though in the beginning of the series they hung out with one another. A combination of watching her bestfriend get closer to Franky triggered her defenses and just like most of the characters it is better to be mean than to show how you really feel. Many people are confused by Franky’s behavior and I think there is quite a few things going on with Franky. I think that the aftermath of Luke is still with Franky and I also think that there is still some guilt that lingers inside of Franky. The dynamic between these three ladies is getting exhausting. People need to start getting real. Between Mini’s secrets, Liv’s walking away, and Franky’s sharp tongue all three of these girls are making their lives harder than it needs to be.
Matty comes back and forces his way back into the picture. Liv takes Matty to see Mini and Franky where Matty confronts Franky about Nick. She explains briefly what her relationship by describing it as “fucking” which is an interesting choice of words. Either meant to hurt Matty or to escape saying something more meaningful. Franky tells Matty to fuck off and then leaves. Mini says something mean about Grace and then the anticipated beating started. Matty tries to stop Liv from attacking Mini as Mini screams that she is pregnant. Secrets. A theme that was in Generation 1 between Jal and Chris. Secrets destroy the best of us.
Rich. Liv went after Rich pretty hardcore by saying Grace is history, that he should be in a looney bin, and using memories of Rich to trigger a response. Rich responds with patience and tries to calm down Liv. I will talk about Rich’s response in more detail. However I have no problems with this scene whatsoever. Even though Liv displayed her leaving instead of listening fed up maneuver on Rich as well.
Liv’s fake cancer scare. Many people find this story line to be a bit strange. The truth is Liv was avoiding Grace and I think she was avoiding mortality in general. That she started to believe that there was something wrong with her. Being afraid of death and dealing with death can make you do and see crazy things. This is why she has her conversation with Grace and why she keeps seeing Grace. By not accepting a part of life…your mind starts to play tricks on you. I am so happy that it was all in her head, because I could not handle another potential death.
The best part of this episode is Doug who is a Skins icon. He is such a great man and I found his talk with Liv to be sweet. He is the first person to ask Liv what she needed. I loved that he mentioned both Grace and Cassie. You can tell he genuinely cares for Grace. He also brings Rich and Liv to see Grace’s grave. Maude Liv’s sister comes too. We finally get to see where Grace is buried. I cried at the end. It was bittersweet. However I am glad that they celebrated Grace instead of mourned her. Grace was such a happy character who loved life. She would not want them to cry where her body rests. She would want them to dance and jump. Enjoy life. Be okay. Be happy. It is unclear if Rich has been to the grave site before many people seem to think he has and some people think that this was the first time Rich has seen the grave. In my personal opinion I think that Liv told Doug what she needed which was to see Grace. Then told Doug that she wanted her sister and Rich to come along. Though it is not clear.
Over all I thought this episode was absolutely fantastic. I do have issues with some of the dynamics and the exhausting behaviors that some of the characters have been displaying. However I cannot help but love an episode in which all of these things happened: Rich smiled, Alex was naked, Rich danced, Maude, Doug, Josie, and of course Matty’s hairy ass.
Solid episode. Go Laya.
