Flow of Madness |
I write about pop culture and life in a philosophical way. Main topics include Skins, Harry Potter, Doctor Who, The Big Bang Theory, Avatar: The Last Airbender, and Ed Sheeran. I will also include anything else that tickles me. Feel free to say hi. Always glad to hear from all of you. Thank you for existing. |
Because apparently this is what I do…this is my in-depth analysis of what we saw of Rich in Episode 9.
What I found interesting was that Rich had more importance than Nick in this episode. Importance meaning quality screen time. The writers must have knew by this time we would be all going mental over how our metal man is doing.
Rich Opens Up to Bring Perspective to Alo
The scene begins with Rich being his metal self. Seriously this is the first time that I have seen fire in him. When he was telling Alo he was acting like a 13 year old girl and then hitting him with his foot. The stubborn passionate git was there in full force to knock some sense into his friend. I was excited.
Then when Alo said he didn’t want the baby you can see Rich changing tactics. I wonder if Grace in his head said “okay… I know you want to smack him…but be gentle.” Or if he just innately knew kicking him in the head was not the way to go. He drops down so he’s on Alo’s level and says one of the most honest…most heart breaking…and most needed to be heard statement of the entire series (in my opinion.)
“Sometimes i think about what would of happened if me and grace had, had a baby, I loved Grace, more than anything else ever, and you feel the same way about Mini right? Yeah and you want to be with her all the time almost like it hurts, when you’re not.. right? Then.. you should be happy you got that chance”
He says this with his voice cracking, a sad smile on his face, and tears in his eyes. He means every word. Now when I say this I do not mean that the other characters are incapable of love or that what they feel is not real…just had to warn. However Rich is the only character that knows how to love in such a devoted and complete way. Because Rich and Grace have been together the longest that they were able to build a foundation for their relationship in order for them to make plans for the future. That is what I mean by my displeasure of comparing Mini and Alo to Rich and Grace. Not that Malo or Fick for that matter are inferior, but that they are different in development and nature. Rich’s love is full on. He fought for her every step of the way. Loved her for everything she was. Never asked her to change for him. He just loved her. It all comes out in that speech…he was making plans before Grace died and all of his plans included Grace. Now that Grace is gone he has had to make plans without her. Alo calls Mini because he loves her, but I also think he called because he saw his friend hurting…he finally got it. When Alo goes to call Mini he has a sad smile on his face.

Rich to the Rescue
This is where I wish that they had introduced the fact that Rich had Grace’s phone. Mini left a long message to Grace about how she loves Alo and needs him. Then Rich comes to her door step to take Mini to see Alo who looked surprised to see her. Rich who has been quite hostile toward Mini finally sees the pain and vulnerability she feels through her messages to Grace. I imagine many people may be confused about Rich’s change of heart. Even if Rich knew about the pregnancy I doubt he would have been so invested if he didn’t know that Mini LOVED Alo. The only way Rich would know that is by listening to those messages. He takes her to Alo and says one thing to her “don’t fuck it up” then leaves. Grace would have been proud.
The Grave Scene
So much going on in this few second scene. First of all this is the first time we see Rich on his own. Not dealing with other people’s problems. Just him…Rich. He walks up to Grace’s grave gives it a loving smile as he takes a swig of alcohol.

Then lays down in the grass next to Gracey and informs her of the news that she is going to become an Auntie. He closes his eyes with a smile on his face.

I will be honest this grave scene shows me two things. I was right in my thinking that Rich is not okay and he does have Grace in his head. He’s still immerse in Grace. Which is to be expected and I would be disappointed to see anything less. He misses her like mad. He is trying so hard to make those plans without her, but with the knowledge of her grave, access to the voice mails people are sending, and also the developments of Malo…I think it’s starting to get to Rich. He will never have that chance to start a family with Grace or to make plans with her. People miss her and he misses her. I feel like this is a bit of a cliff hanger though not as dramatic as Mini’s, but still a cliff hanger. Will Rich be okay? Ultimately I believe he will be okay. I think he will have a break down in Episode 10 either before or after talking to Matty.
One thing we do know and that we should have never doubted. Rich loves Grace. Rich misses Grace. Grace still has Rich’s heart and Grace is still in his head. By the end of Episode 10 he needs to have some closure. As much as I love Hardlet…I want him to get to a healthy place and so would Gracey.
