Flow of Madness |
I write about pop culture and life in a philosophical way. Main topics include Skins, Harry Potter, Doctor Who, The Big Bang Theory, Avatar: The Last Airbender, and Ed Sheeran. I will also include anything else that tickles me. Feel free to say hi. Always glad to hear from all of you. Thank you for existing. |
This is part of my Grace Effect series if you haven’t read my others: Franky, Mini, Nick, Alo, and Liv all of those can be found through my table of contents link on my tumblr page under the Grace heading. Check them out.
This series examines the relationship that Grace had with each member of the group. It also examines the effects of losing Grace on each member of the group. This is my second to last part. This is all about Matty and Grace.
Relationship
They are another dynamic duo that we never got to spend much time with. I do think though that Matty respected and cared for Grace. I definitely think that Grace admired Matty’s talents this is why she trusted him with the lead part of her play. One of my favorite scenes that Grace had (due to her cute fierinesss) was when she stormed into his bedroom to demand him to come back and do the play. She was so fierce yet graceful yet happy. Not sure how she does it. Matty got himself up and felt that Grace was the kind of person he could declare his love for Liv to without judgment. I would have loved to have seen more interactions between these two. Grace though was invested in Matty in her episode and she was invested in Matty in 6x1 that he worked things out to make things right again. She just did.
Grief
Matty was the driver of the accident so feeling guilty is only natural. He was there when it happened and he saw Grace lying on his car obviously injured. In absolute shock, fear, and anguish he starts to run. Leaving Grace more so than the accident eats away at Matty. He left her. He left his friend. He is trapped in an exotic land by himself not knowing what to do. The police are after him, he feels guilty, and everyone he loves is not there or hating him. He is completely isolated in body and mind. The hollowness of knowing that you took part in your friend’s death whether accidental or otherwise haunts you. It haunts Matty. The most tragic thing about Matty and his story line is that…he will never ever get that redemption he craves. He can apologize to everyone and they may forgive him in time, but the one person he needs to be forgiven by is Grace. Rich may have delivered the message…but it won’t take that nagging pain from him. Matty though turns himself in at the end of the episode to set things straight or face the consequences. This is a brave decision. That needed to be made.
Matty will always remember Grace as the kind girl who always tried to help. The girl he left. The girl he never meant to hurt. I will remember it as an accident where no one is at fault…but try telling that to him.
