Analysis of the friendship between Sid and Tony. (As requested by h-a-r-d-l-e-t)
Tony and Sid were the first epic male friendship we saw on Skins. They have been friends since they were little which means two things. It means that they have a long history and that they have distinct roles in their friendship.
Tony is the apparent leader of the friendship and Sid is the follower. Tony on the surface has everything that Sid wants and has never had. Tony gets girls, gets respect, gets good grades, and is considered the best looking guy in school. Sid worships Tony in many ways especially when it comes to Michelle’s affections.
Tony is someone who thrives on people looking up to him and people who enable his antics. Sid was in essence the perfect friend for him. Sid gave him a bit of worship and also some good times as well. As Tony began to lose control of the people around him we see that Tony actually needs Sid more than Sid needs Tony.
Despite the strange power dynamic and the games that are directed by Tony. They do care for one another immensely. Sid would do anything for Tony we can see that time and time again throughout both series. Sid left Cassie to go find Tony after he realized something was wrong and Tony needed his help. He forgave Tony after their talk in the hospital. Then after Tony’s accident Sid sat with Tony everyday in hospital. He also took Tony’s accident hard, because the accident changed the dynamic between the both of them. Sid not being a person that is good with feelings or even tough situations had no idea how to act.
Tony we also see moments of true friendship. Before Tony’s accident he made sure Cassie got Sid’s letter which gave Sid the opportunity to start a relationship with her. At the end of Series 2 Tony made the ultimate sacrifice of letting Sid go in order for Sid to be happy. This is the scene in which we see how much Tony needs Sid and how their friendship is a big part of both of them.
Tony and Sid may have had drama. They also may have had a toxic friendship due to one’s inability to stick up for themselves and the others inability to empathize. However they were great friends and I imagine they still are.
It’s Tony and Sid man. Tony and Sid. Always there to get into trouble.
