Flow of Madness |
I write about pop culture and life in a philosophical way. Main topics include Skins, Harry Potter, Doctor Who, The Big Bang Theory, Avatar: The Last Airbender, and Ed Sheeran. I will also include anything else that tickles me. Feel free to say hi. Always glad to hear from all of you. Thank you for existing. |
I have been seeing this confession pop up on my Dash and in the tags that makes me upset. I figure I would use this anger to write a bit of a rant/analysis of the situation. In order to hopefully give perspective to the events that unfolded in Rich’s episode.
It is true that Rich contributed and allowed Blood’s house to be trashed. He may have even enjoyed the mayhem that ensued in that house. However most of the damage was done by Alo inviting people to a gig that Rich never agreed to until later in the episode when they were already invited to come. Most of the damage to the house was done by Alo. Rich allowed it and he did not go out of his way to stop it and he also took part in some of the destruction to the house. However to say that Rich was solely responsible for the damages done to the house is a bit unfair. Every single member of the gang and strangers contributed to it. Some may be more at fault than others however there are many people who are guilty in the destruction of Blood’s property.
Another thing I want to point out which will help me transition to my next major point is Rich’s protectiveness over Grace’s room. Rich kept Grace’s room immaculate and even locked the door in order to keep people out. Minus the check list of what he planned to do to get Grace back This is telling and I feel like it should remind people of why Rich was in Blood’s house in the first place. Blood kept Rich away from Grace. Blood is not completely innocent in this mess and in many ways what he did was worse. He treated Rich like he was not an important or vital person in Grace’s life. Rich has not seen Grace in a month. He has no idea how she is doing or what is going on with her. When you love someone and they are ill or hurt you realize how little control you have. So you hold onto whatever you can. Like showing up every day at the hospital to hold her hand. Or watching over her. Doing something. Blood denied Rich the opportunity to be there for Grace and denied him the opportunity to say goodbye. That is not something you can replace or rebuild it is a loss that Rich has to accept.
Blood can clean his house. He can fix everything in it. He can tear it down and rebuild it from scratch. Rich though cannot get that time back he cannot get the comfort of just being next to the person he loves while she is ill. To me that is more of a crime than destruction of property.
Another thing some people have expressed is their anger that Professor Blood did not get Rich in trouble or react to the mess more. Honestly I think that his reaction was perfect, because finally Blood got his priorities sorted. It is sad that it took him an intense tragedy to understand. Blood has always been someone who admires and measures people by material success. Blood is now on his stairs with his house in ruins only he does not care. He couldn’t give a fuck that his house has been destroyed, because it doesn’t matter. He lost his daughter. Something he can’t buy, he can’t negotiate to fix, or lie his way out of. He also finally admitted that Rich was a vital part of Grace’s life. The fact that he did not care about the mess was a huge character moment for Blood.
Also Rich felt guilty about the mess. He apologized to Blood even though Blood showed no signs of being angry. He also envisioned Grace commenting about the house being trashed in which he responded that he was sorry and that things got out of hand. He feels guilty.
I think perspective helps everything.
Rich is not a perfect person. In does tend to think about his own pain and his own situation. He does not think about others. As evident by how both Mini and Liv reacted to Rich when they learned that “Grace woke up.” Also how Liv reminds Rich “you’re not the only one who misses her.” This is something that Rich has always had issues with. He tends to focus on himself and how he feels and how the world is attacking him. Until someone reminds him. Rich was angry. ANGRY. Because Blood kept him from Grace. It did not cross his mind that Blood was just as broken over this until that final scene.
Both Blood and Rich made some mistakes. However both of them did it because they LOVED Grace that much. The symbolism of the house being trashed can be seen in several different ways as well.
