I write about pop culture and life in a philosophical way. Main topics include Skins, Harry Potter, Doctor Who, The Big Bang Theory, Avatar: The Last Airbender, and Ed Sheeran. I will also include anything else that tickles me. Feel free to say hi. Always glad to hear from all of you. Thank you for existing. |
This is an analysis of the relationship that Naomi and Emily have.
Like many of the relationships that I tend to enjoy and support Emily and Naomi act as opposites who help one another become better people. Naomi is an independent, intelligent, opinionated, sarcastic, and in many ways cynical individual. Emily is a sweet, thoughtful, patient, and in more ways than one closeted individual. They both had lessons to learn and both of them supplied one another with those lessons.
Naomi does not want to fall in love and hates the feeling of relying on someone else to feel happy or whole. She feels as if a bit of her power has been taken away as she falls further in love with Emily. This feeling eats at her throughout Series 3 and into the summer. Emily though is a perfect person for Naomi, because she gives Naomi time and she is persistent in her pursuit of Naomi. Through their love Naomi learns to rely on someone else and allows for icy exterior to melt as she comes to terms with both her feelings and her sexuality.
Emily is someone who never gets noticed. She is usually seen as the second best compared to her twin Katie. She has a hard time standing up for herself and going after what she wants. Expressing herself. She is sweet and has a heart of gold though. Naomi gives her something to fight fore and gives her the opportunity to stand up to not only her sister but her mom as well. Giving her the independence she needed as she comes to fully realize and accept her sexuality and own her love life.
Together they function. However over the summer while making plans for the future and the relationship becoming serious. Naomi’s fears and issues with intimacy flares up and she has an affair with a girl named Sophia. What I find interesting about Series 4 is that it seems to me the roles reverse. Naomi has an affair and realizes how important Emily is to her and begins to think of the future. Even allows Emily to move in with her without freaking out. Only for Emily to get hurt by the news that Naomi cheated. Emily becomes less trusting and in many ways cynical about love. Now it is is Naomi chasing Emily to forgive her and stop lashing out at her. Stop pushing her away.
The series ends with Naomi baring everything including the fact that she bought tickets for them to travel after college. About how long Naomi has secretly wanted Emily and how scared it made her. It ended with Emily forgiving her. Naomi and Emily love one another and again both of these people have something to offer one another. Their relationship was made sour due to insecurities and lack of communication about their future. However one thing is clear…these ladies do care for one another and they are one of the more epic relationships Skins has had.
