Flow of Madness |
I write about pop culture and life in a philosophical way. Main topics include Skins, Harry Potter, Doctor Who, The Big Bang Theory, Avatar: The Last Airbender, and Ed Sheeran. I will also include anything else that tickles me. Feel free to say hi. Always glad to hear from all of you. Thank you for existing. |
Anonymous asked: It's been a year since Gen 3 wrapped. What's your view of where the characters would be 12 months on. Rich at Cambridge. Franky (moved away from Bristol, according to Dakota's post-finale interview) trying to sort her shit out. Alo and Mini dealing with financial pressures. Matty presumably doing a spell in jail. Liv, Alex, Nick? Even Rider? How do you see all their lives going right now? Love to know your thoughts. :)
Amazing question.
Liv: I always pictured her doing some soul searching going to school becoming a Nurse. Because she’s the perfect personality for that type of job. Caring, firm, and tough. I also picture her meeting this guy that I like to call Gio. He can keep up with her. She drives him crazy. He is completely hers and she is completely his. They have a great life together cause they are each other’s constants which is what Liv needs. That’s how I see her. :)
Alex: I see him traveling all over and never really settling down. I think he has a giant wander lust streak that won’t really die. He still keeps in contact with Liv while he works in random social jobs traveling and having fun.
Nick: I think he goes to school and learns to be his own man. See him doing something in sports. Maybe become a coach or something that has to do with his new leading skills. That was his journey and it would be sweet for him to hone them in life.
Franky: Moved away from Bristol to sort through things and spend time with her sister. Who I think she needs. I see her going to University as well and majoring in art. I feel like she is going down road.
Matty: Spend some time in jail for fleeing the accident and hopefully not for the drug deal. After that I kinda see him working the odd job and working on his music.
Rich: Goes to Cambridge gets into writing and is still an opinionated difficult person even though more open minded thanks to Grace. But come on he’s…still Rich. I can also see him falling in love again. I feel like he was made to be a husband and father just like his dad except for 100000000000 times more wit and he would not date an Anita.
Mini and Alo: I see tons of rough patches. Money wise, baby wise, and life wise. Alo works the farm and Mini gets a job maybe in the fashion world. But they will survive but I can’t imagine life being a peachy as it was at the end of the Finale. They have a lot of growing to do as a couple and have a lot to think about in terms of their kid.
Rider: Is the creepy dude who hits on guys and women alike as he sells douchey t-shirts from his trunk.

- When I say “halfway through generation 3” i mean Series 3 and when I mean generation 4 i meant series 4 lmao
In many ways I see Liv as a Type 6: The Loyalist. I played around with the possibility of her being a Type 8: The Challenger. However I feel like Liv is a complex character (despite popular belief) and she is not so much confrontational but mostly scared of being left behind, of being abandoned, and of not having someone to rely on. This is extremely apparent in Series 6 and also apparent in Series 5.
Liv has abandonment issues. For several reasons due to her family life hell even her love life. Type 6’s are constantly anxious about feeling supported. Yet at the same time they are the most loyal and the most dependable of friends. They are the ones that stay because they want you to stay.
I feel like Liv is a pretty healthy Type 6. However when she feels her world is not being supported she quickly becomes unhealthy. By becoming angry, bitter, and at times rather confrontational. It is a gut reaction triggered by hurt and fear that they are being left behind. That they are replaceable and that they will never find that safe place to land.
This is the MAIN reason why Liv to be me is a Type 6.
I am breaking down all the major symbols and motifs that were used in Skins throughout the generations. One of the major ones is the use of benches.
If a character is sitting on a bench usually it is a scene in which a character is sitting in a introspective silence by themselves trying to figure things out…trying to make a choice. Liv Malone sat on a bench smoking a cigarette as she decided whether or not to go to the doctor’s to get the strange sensation in her side checked out. Katie Fitch has sat on a bench determining what to do with a life changing piece of news. Cassie has sat and danced on a bench as she decided to to attempt suicide. Benches where the people are alone tend to signify a crossroad in which someone has to make a hard choice.
Benches in which there is more than one person tend to symbolize truth and honest discussions and connections. JJ and Emily bond on a bench. JJ and Lara also bond on a bench. Cassie and Sid finally get on the same page on a bench. People are still at a crossroads though, but they are not alone they are connecting with another person as they deal with the difficulties of one’s life
To me these choices are brilliant, because benches tend to represent in life a place to watch, to relax, to think, and to wait. The use of the bench in the scene adds to the scene and it’s quite nerdy for those who catch these kinds of things.
Anonymous asked: i agree with you. 6x2 and 6x8 are beautiful episodes. honestly liv and rich were flawless all of series 6. at the end of it those were the two people who i really wanted to be okay like i need them to be okay.
6x2 and 6x8 were massively beautiful because they were honest episodes. About true loss and grief. Of losing control. Of losing who you are in the face of dealing with something that is bigger than who you are. About accepting things you don’t want to accept and trying to move pass it.
Rich’s episode also had humor in it along with the gorgeous moments while Liv’s episode was a gut wrenching ride from beginning to end. Both episodes ended with hope. Both episodes Liv or Rich gave the other what they needed. Liv gave Rich perspective. Rich gave Liv an opportunity to celebrate Grace.
Gorgeous episode.
I agree with you about the two characters as well. I mean I want all of them to be happy. I want Nick to find someone who loves him unconditionally without complication. I want Franky to find peace. However I agree the two characters who stole my heart and never gave it back to me are Liv and Rich’s. Why? Because their episodes were that good. Laya and Alex’s acting was subtle and honest. They made you feel oppose to showing you. The writing was gorgeous. Their storyline was also closely linked with the truth of Series 6. Loss and finding hope.
Wow I ranted.
Under the cut I will examine the friendship of Rich and Liv. I will explain why I feel that this friendship is a sleeper awesome friendship by examining Series 5, Series 6, and the Locked-In extras.

Liv Malone (Gen 3)
Best be watching yourself, because Liv is a Scorpio. Liv an unyielding force who passionate, intense, and a risk taker. She can be seen as smiling and carefree while at the same time be seen as unapproachable. Because there is something about Liv that screams she will say what needs to be said and that things that may need to be done like punch you in face will happen if needed. While being an easy going, fun loving, and amazingly talented party girl. All of this falls under Scorpio. Intense insides and cool outsides. One of the things that stand out as Scorpio traits that Liv has comes from a statement that Maude made about her not crying. Scorpios have a tendency of pushing important feelings down, because they hate the feeling of being weak. They are also possessive you can see that with Mini in terms of Franky and Alex with his date. They also seek revenge if they feel wronged…Nick anyone? Also they hold grudges. However they also have the most loving, protective, loyal, and committed sense of loving people than all the others. Meaning she’s not going anywhere. She’s there. She’s like gum on your stiletto. Also they are extremely sexual and extremely talented at it as well. The queen ladies and gentlemen.
Kerouacophy and I were discussing what would we be if we and skins characters were fruit and it was all going fine until we started talking about Liv. She seems to think Liv would be a strawberry, but I just see her as an orange. To be fair Megan did have some reasons behind her choice whereas I just said “SHE JUST IS OKAY?” Strawberries (according to Megan) are basically SEX. Well now I’ve thought about it and I have some reasons as to why Liv is the perfect orange.
These were really good points but I actually think Liv is a rasberry.
Since you used symbolism to defend against strawberries (which I thought for a second) that opens the door for symbolism to be used to refute oranges.
Oranges and orange trees has always been a symbol of marriage. Usually you can find them in paintings of married people back in the day. Though it is true that Liv is straight to the point and does not play with men in a seductive way. She doesn’t marry them as well.
I do like your argument about the soft hard layer that oranges have that protect the heart of the fruit inside. Rasberries grow on thorny branches and act as the same kind of protection. Only when you prove yourself you can take a rasberry and they become a loyal friend who will stay with you always. Even when shit gets rough.
Rasberries also symbolize kindness and besides those thorns. Liv is a kind hearted person who wants to be there for his friends.
Rasberries are also hard to transport sometimes and I think Liv is more vulnerable than she likes the world to know. Maybe that is why she has those thorns.
This is my argument for why Liv is a rasberry and not an orange.

Skins Series Tracks #50 - Skins Series 6 Episode 8 “Liv”
Track Name: Heart Heart by Withered Hand
Played When: Rich, Maude, Doug, and Liv have themselves a little dance in celebration of Gracey’s life and what she represented.
This is one of my favorite songs ever let alone a Skins song. It’s a song that makes you dance a bit. You know in that horribly white and awkward way. It’s a song about enjoying life and being yourself. There are also morbid elements dripped in it. It’s a perfect song for the Soldier of Love Rich and Queen Liv to celebrate the Amazing Gracey with.
I like girls…No, I like a girl…No, I love her.
