I was thinking about the two characters that were introduced in the second series of a generation: Alex and Sketch. I started to think about the point of these characters and what these two characters brought to the generations they joined so late. I feel that both of these characters serve opposite purposes though they do have some similarities.
One of the similarities that Alex and Sketch share is that they are both taking care of people. Sketch is taking care of her Mom who has MS only she feels trapped by this responsibility and resents the fact that she is not living like a normal teenager. When we meet Alex he is taking care of his grandmother only he wants to. He loves his Grandmother and is willing and happy to quit school to take care of her full time in order to save her from being moved to a nursing home.
One of the main differences between these two characters would be the purpose of their characters. Sketch was brought onto the show to be a divisive character that causes drama in the group especially in terms of the friendship between Anwar and Maxxie. Sketch has an obsession with Maxxie that grows to dangerous levels and in an act of desperation she poisons Michelle for a chance to kiss Maxxie in a school play. When Maxxie turns her down she then makes a move on Anwar (who is desperate for sex) promising that she is over Maxxie while she slowly tries to turn Anwar into Maxxie. She is a creepy character who was meant to create drama…she also tries to get her claws into Anwar towards the end of the series by telling him to stay in Bristol because his friends are leaving him. Sketch is a negative character meant to play with people’s minds.
Alex on the other hand was brought onto the show to help bring the group together and to bring some amount of happiness to the group. Now the series is not over yet, so there may be a chance that there is more to Alex than meets the eye. However the Alex we know now tried to give the gang a chance to say goodbye to their friend and also has tried to help both Liv and Nick. He is a positive character. Who lives a life of chance and detachment. He also a character who is not tainted by the death of Grace, so he is able to see the situation with unbiased and objective eyes.
Another similarity that Sketch and Alex have is that they are not universally accepted by the group. Sketch more so than Alex. Sketch is a character that the gang learns to hate due to what she did to Michelle and Maxxie. Alex is a character that came to the gang at a tough time and many characters like Mini are suspicious of Alex. However the difference lies in that the more we learn about Sketch the less the gang grew to like her. I feel the opposite will happen with Alex…the more the gang gets to know Alex the more the gang will accept him.
So these are my thoughts about these late comer characters. Personally I prefer Alex, but I think that was by design.

Sketch
She was manipulative, scary, creepy, and horribly pathetic. I hate her relationship with Anwar. I hate what she did to Maxxie and Michelle. I hated her existence all together in series 2. Absolutely the worst character in Generation 1. The absolute worst. *shudders*
