Summary:
This is continuing my series where I pick 2-3 important or awesome scenes from an episode to analyze.
This episode is all about growing up and taking responsibility for yourself. It is also about meeting someone half way especially in terms of Alo and his Mom. Instead of his Mom forcing Alo to come to where she expects him to be. She also has to meet him by not making him feel useless which helps no one. Also Alo must try to take on some of the responsibility of the farm. It is an episode that also highlights changes in relationships as well. Alo who has always had Rich to himself realizes that Rich is growing up and has other forms of support. That is a hard thing to stomach sometimes.
Anyway here are my three favorite and key scenes of this episode.
1) The Pub Scene

This was a great scene for the entire gang. Alo is receiving advice from the gang about how to best handle his parents. Most of their advice fall along the lines of mayhem and revolution. Despite this Alo says he loves his parents and he doesn’t want to sabotage them by destroying the farm. In this scene we also get Rich’s “Ah-ha you’re gay for your parents” line. Classic. We see Grace dance with a stranger. Not to mention that epic bromantic hug between Alo and Rich. They are like brothers and for the most part they have only had one another to rely on consistently. It’s a bond for the ages, really.
2. The Condom Fight
How could you not like this scene? Actually better question. How could you not want to have a condom fight after watching this scene? This was a creative use of farm products for an epic group fight. Everything about this scene was fun. Matty’s possessed running. The little moment with Rich and Grace. Great feel good fun. This scene was also the picture of Alo’s rebellion against growing up. The beginning of the push back.
3. “You Adapt”
This scene was perfect. It also gives you some philosophy as well. Alo has hit rock bottom. He has no idea if his Dad is okay or not. He has messed up the farm. His Mom is livid. He feels like absolute shit and here he is sharing a couch with a person that is usually meanest to him. However she does not shun him instead she gives Alo sound advice that I wish she followed the following year. That you have to adapt to things, because life will always throw you curve balls. I also enjoyed that even after Mini said something profound Alo says he’s going to go see Rich in a pout. It was also a wonderful Mini and Alo scene.
Those are my scenes for this episode.

With only two episodes until the series finale of Gen 3. What are you going to miss most about Gen 3? Any predictions for the finale? What do you hope to see next year in the three special episodes? Biscuits!
Missing Gen 3
I am going to miss the characters. I really am. All the characters even when they are pissing me off sometimes I adore. I root for them. I am going to miss Rich and Alo’s bromance. I’m going to miss people mentioning Grace or just Grace in general. I’m going to miss Mini and Alo’s banter. Nick’s leers. Franky’s sharp one liners. Liv’s vodka drinking. Alex’s ass. Matty’s creepy stares. Rich’s snark. Hell Rich’s face. I will miss the biscuits and the weird dancing. All of it really.
I will also miss the cast. Love the constant banter and molesting that goes on throughout the entire cast. They are lovely.
Predictions for the Finale
You mean besides Rich is totally going to live and be fine? I think that it will be focusing on bringing the group together. People dealing with their futures. I think that Alo is going to have a similar ending to Anwar in that he will be stuck wondering how he made no plans and dealing with something he never planned on (a baby). I think that in this episode the triangle will be resolved…I’m guessing Franky will be on her own. Rich will have a moment of closure. I feel like the open ended plot line is not going to be crazy or anything. I feel like it will be in regards to Fick or Matty. I don’t think it will be as quite explosive as Gen 2 more Gen 1 style. I will have more on this after Episode 9!
Hopes for the Specials
I hope they get most of the cast back. I hope they don’t just focus on a few characters. I think all of us are wondering how every character is doing (minus Thomas). So I hope it’s more ensemble than just a few characters. For Gen 1 mainly just focusing on the things we aren’t sure of…what happened to Sid/Cassie, how is Jal coping?, what is Tony up to? etc. Just answering all those fan questions. I don’t even thing something insane has to happen really. Gen 2 obviously the main question is how is the gang after finding out about Freddie and what happened to Cook. Gen 3 I hope they ALL come back and have an adventure together. They were getting together in Series 5 and then were torn apart in series 6. It would be nice to have a special where we can see the group dynamics really play out. If Rich goes to University some changing dynamic of his friendship with Alo could be good fun as well.

My other computer has fried so I cannot quickly find the links to the other three parts of the Great Effect. However as soon as I do I will make a post with those links. This is a series dedicated at looking at the relationship Grace had with the rest of the group and how her death has effected them. So far I have written about Grace-Franky, Grace-Mini, and Grace-Nick.
Today is dedicated to Alo-Pops and Grace. The fun ones :)

This post is dedicated to analyzing and picking the most important scenes of 5x5 “Nick.”
This episode deals with issues of identity, truth, action vs. inaction, and also empowerment. Nick is a sweet character who has been sold a pack of lies by his father about what it means to be a man. Nick has thrown himself into his Dad’s philosophy and is trying to be that macho man rugby player, but there is so much more to Nick than that. This episode is about Nick finally getting to the point in his life where he actually WANTS to be more than that and wants his father to stop being a cunt.
Both of Nick’s episodes in Series 5 and Series 6 examines the relationship that Nick has with his brother and how Nick is a guy who easily conflicted. Both episodes Nick feels so intensely that he snaps. Also in both episodes there are themes of escapism until his emotions get to a level that no amount of narcotics could drown the feelings away.
Nick is a sweet guy who cares deeply and is conflicted about the kind of man he wants to be.
Here are some of the most important scenes of this episode and also one amusing scene as well.
1. Rich Explains Nick to Grace
This interaction made me laugh hysterically. Especially after Rich says this he adds a sarcastic “obviously” at the end. Besides the snark and Grace’s genuine confusion this scene represents something important to Nick’s character. Nick doesn’t fit in with the gang and the gang openly mocks him. This is the first time in a long time that Nick has felt mocked and while this is happening his brother seems to be easily accepted by this group of friends. Nick is the outsider and Matty is easily one of them.
2. Breaking Stuff
I love this scene. Sean Teale did amazing with this scene. This was Nick’s breaking point. All the bullshit. All the pretending. All the bad feelings he felt about himself and the things around him. They all build up inside of Nick and after being rejected by his father he snaps. Taking a golf club to his father’s things. This was the scene that made me realize that there is something more to Nick that Nick has so much more to give besides being fake. This was real and this was raw.
3. Swings with Franks
I loved this scene. Nick is sitting there after messing up on so many different levels. Then Franky, the girl whom he posted horrible pictures of around the school sits next to him. He speaks with such honesty about how he knows he can act a dick sometimes and that he doesn’t know why he does it. Then Franky tells him that he is not a complete Dick. Nick is at a crossroads when he is sitting with Franky. He can run, he can fight, or he can go back to being the person he was. Nick has to decide what he wants to do. With the help of Coach Pooter Nick decides to stand up to his Dad and start thinking about what he wants.
A great episode.

When we enter this episode we know that Liv is still carrying on with Nick. This episode we go on a journey with Liv that is filled with drugs, denial, and finally accepting that some truths need to be acknowledged. We learn that Liv’s Dad is not in the picture. A Mom who goes through strange phases to try and frets over her daughters hating her without attempting to get close to them. We also learn that Liv has two sisters a younger one named Maude and an older sister Bella who is in prison for attacking their Mom due to resentment over what happened with their Dad leaving. Her family life seems to be uncomfortable and tense with major communication issues.
This mirrors Liv’s story line I feel. Liv has resentment, guilt, and anger towards Mini and instead of talking about those feelings she has tried to strike back indirectly (Nick). This story is about Liv severing ties with toxic relationships, embracing a new love interest, and learning to speak real about the feelings she has.
These are a few of the scenes that I found most important in the episode. It was hard to pick just three! :)
1. The Gang at Liv’s House
I loved everything about the gang partying at Liv’s house. I uncomfortably enjoyed Mini’s apology and the tentative bonding of two factions of friends. I enjoyed Alo’s conversation with Liv’s little sister Maude. I was tickled at Rich complaining about hugs yet a few second later he is seen talking very closely to Grace upstairs. This was just a fun bit with the gang before things got real.
2. Scene with Franky on the Couch

When Series 5 finished I declared Franky the Jesus Christ of Gen 3. She seems to pop up when people hit rock bottom to give them perspective and guide them to do the right things. Liv is feeling horribly and is not happy with her family and with Mini. Then Franky pops up to remind Liv that her and Mini are friends that they did have great times together. She also informs Liv that hate and blame does not help her and does not help anyone. I loved this interaction.
3. Liv and Mini’s Scene at the End

I hate and love this scene. I hate this scene because I felt Mini was vindictive in this scene when Liv was being honest. Like proper honest. I understand Mini’s anger and to tell you the truth I would not have forgiven Liv either not then at least. However this was striking back at Liv as she was starting to confront the issues their friendship has. So I think this scene was an important one. It show cases a broken friendship based on a long past. Something that has yet to fully be fixed even in the current series.

“I thought you were a nasty bunch of self-absorbed, attention-seeking cocks. It was hard to see why you hung out together. But then…I got it. You make each other laugh. You look out for each other. You love each other.” - Franky
I forgot to do quotes for Franky’s episode so he we go!

“I’m a no good shit magnet. I’m nothing.” - Franky
“So why do I see a…glorious fucking head-fucked thing?” - Matty

A billion times better than this, this bollocks place. And I really feel that, that we could be mates…fucking awesome mates.” - Franky
“Welcome to Bristol, Franky.” - Grace
“Cheers! You fuckers.” - Franky
This episode follows Mini McGuinness as she tries to hold onto the little bit of control she has left then loses it completely.
In this episode we also meet Mini’s Mum who has a negative philosophy about sex and men. Telling her daughter that the only thing men want is sex and once they get it they leave you. This of course along with an absentee father creates complications for Mini in regards to sex. We find out she is a virgin who is trying so hard to hang onto Nick and stay a virgin at the same time. Afraid of what having sex could mean. She also has a fall out with Grace who decides that maybe hanging out with Franky would be best while Mini is in a mood. Liv who really does care about Mini tries to help Mini only to find herself getting more and more frustrated which leads her to sleep with Nick out of some kind of revenge. Mini sees this and immediately she panics and decides to lose her virginity to Nick. The episode ends with Mini sharing a morning walk of shame with her Mother.
This episode covers themes of surrounding sexuality, control, dishonesty, secrecy, and desire to keep up appearances. Mini wants to be seen as someone who has control, has friends, has popularity, and has a wonderful boyfriend. This episode Mini spends all her time making sure those labels and definitions stayed exactly how she wanted only to lose it all in the end.
These are my favorite scenes in terms of importance and also a bit of adorable as well from this episode:
1. Mini and Mom’s Conversation

First of all that is the most ridiculous exercise equipment I have ever seen in my life. I digress though…that is not why I picked this scene. I picked this scene because I think Mini’s relationship with her mother explains Mini quite a bit. Why she wants to build a family of friends that worship her and why she has such a complicated relationship with men/sex in general. Her Mom essentially scoffs at Mini when she talks about “Love” and then reminds her daughter then men are only after one thing—her virginity—her sex. To me this scene was eye opening.
2. Liv and Mini’s Fight in the Club

Mini has lost control completely. She is probably at her most vulnerable and her most wild state when she has this conversation with Liv. She is convinced that Liv and Nick are having a fling behind her back. Accuses of Liv of doing so and Liv tells Mini that she is losing everyone. That no one is willing to take her crap anymore and the only one that is left is her. Mini though reminds Liv that Nick is her and she is not to go near him. After Mini leaves we see that Liv and Nick begin to have sex. Many people scream “SLUT” at this point when it comes to Liv. I agree you should never sleep with your mate’s guy for any reason. However I understand why Liv did it. She was angry and frustrated with Mini things have been sour and complicated between them for awhile now. Then suddenly you have this massive fight and BAM you just want to hurt her. Again not saying this is good or that Mini shouldn’t be mad at Liv. Because she should…but I don’t think it makes her a slut. I think it makes her someone who cannot express her true feelings to her friend and she channeled all the negativity through the wrong channels. This act is made worse by the fact that after this happened Mini tried to keep Nick by losing her virginity and Nick went through with it.
#3. Rich and Grace’s first kiss

Grace had a story line in this episode even if she was not the main focus. In the beginning of the episode she showed her fashion designs with pride only to be thrown under the bus by Mini who had other ideas for the fashion show. For the first time we see Grace stand up to Mini and then begin hanging out with Franky in public. When Mini has her meltdown and faints Grace’s designs were used in the fashion show and Grace was seen walking down the cat walk with ALO! I was stoked for that. Then of course there was this little moment that was sweet and so innocent. After trying to be nice to Mini one more time and Mini being short with her Grace then decides…okay that guy…that cute metal guy I have been thinking about…but have been trying not too…in order to keep our friendship…yeah I am going for it. Then like a boss Grace Violet goes up to said metal man and asks him out. The exchange was filled with typical Rich and Grace banter and then the first kiss was so tentative, scared, and sweet. It was adorable.
So that is my thoughts on Mini’s episode! Quotes coming soon!
