Flow of Madness |
I write about pop culture and life in a philosophical way. Main topics include Skins, Harry Potter, Doctor Who, The Big Bang Theory, Avatar: The Last Airbender, and Ed Sheeran. I will also include anything else that tickles me. Feel free to say hi. Always glad to hear from all of you. Thank you for existing. |
This post I am declaring what I feel are the main canon ships of ‘Skins.’ One from each Generation. Now I am not picking these ships based on the writers intentions but instead I am using three indicators to choose these pairings.
I have picked three pairings. All three of them are quite different and in my opinion represent a different kind of love. Another thing about these pairings is that not all of them were endgame. So let us begin…the main ships of ‘Skins.’

Anonymous asked: Can you tell what happened to Grace and Rich in Skins the novel?
Rich was not the focus in the Skins novel at all. You saw how important Alo is to Rich. You see their friendship. You see that they are both outcasts. Alo trying to break in and Rich trying to stand out. Rich’s wit is show cased in the novel. Also his heart. There’s a scene where Alo is about to get his heart broken and Rich is in a foam party with Alo. So Rich took off his shirt and tried to dance to distract Alo. So I think when you read the novel you see his wit, sensitivity, and also WHY he is so angry and distrustful toward people.
As for Grace she has more of a substantial story line in the novel. You see how lonely she is and how she wants someone. She has a crush on a guy who does Ballet who turns out to be gay. He leads her on and confuses her. Kind of uses her as a way to see if he can be straight since his family will disapprove except Grace genuinely liked him. You can also see Grace getting frustrated about Mini and trying to make connections outside the group.
Mainly what you learn is that Grace and Rich are both extremely lonely and misunderstood characters.
Anonymous asked: I remember before series 6 i was thinking how rich and graces relationship was so perfect, and there was no way either of them would cheat, and so i was wondering how they would manage to screw up their relationship cause that has to happen sometimes. I think, sad as it was, it was their only real option because anything else would have been so unrealistic and wouldnt have fitted the characters personalities and the kind of relationship they had.
I agree with you and to be honest I was doing the same. I’m like ‘what the hell can they do to Hardlet?’ They wrote themselves in a corner.
They created a guy who is suited for relationships. Who hates dating and fears being rejected. He is also a guy who has high standards for himself and tends to have tunnel vision for the things she loves. Meaning he is a completely devoted guy who prefers extremely deep meaningful long term relationships oppose to shallow ones.
Then you have a girl who loves unconditionally and who believes in the happily ever after. Who wants to have a million kids and find her prince. She loves deeply and doesn’t give up on people. She is also someone who is sure in herself and doesn’t want to hurt people. She wants everything to work out.
Together they are a married couple who hasn’t married yet. They communicate. They take care of one another. Their relationship has built in mechanism to handle the stress of life. So what could tear them apart? External forces.
Their relationship also matured them more than the others so in reality they developed through their relationship and they had less to learn than their other peers. So other story lines that could have worked are Grace getting pregnant. Blood kicking her out and Rich/Grace surviving it. Or disagreements about the future. However no matter what they would survive due to their personalities and those built in mechanisms.
So really death was the easiest conclusion to come to. Even in death though Rich could not be broken due to the strength and maturity that being with Grace gave him.

Summary:
I was doing some research because I am writing and writing to revamp things tomorrow and I was looking at Grace’s Series 5 profile. I know that I saw this and I know that it caught my eye, but tonight it got my mind turning.
For Grace’s dream date she said this:
DREAM DATE: Definitely Mr. Darcy; we’ve met; he’s a fabulous tap dancer.
Mr. Darcy is a gruff sometimes rude seeming and arrogant sounding character from Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice. The only thing is that there is more to him than that arrogant and prideful exterior. He is actually a kind man with strong principles, strong sense of self, loyalty, kindness, and of course honesty.
Does that sound familiar? It should. Rich Hardbeck. I often said and I think even on here say that Rich reminds me of a rebellious underdog version of Mr. Darcy. He seems like an asshole but really he’s quite sensitive and a decent guy.
I kinda like this. I’m nerding out a bit.
Anonymous asked: Do you think Graces' style change and openness in series 6 changed bc she stood up too her parents at the end of series 5? Because while watching the first episode of series 5 and the first of 1 there's a huge difference. Same with Richard? They seem as if they grew together in a positive way. Even after Grace dies Rich seems as though he's in a calm state when he gets back from sorting some stuff out
Yes I do. They both changed. For the better and not because they forcibly changed one another. It was an organic change that occurs when you fall in love with someone who influences you and earns your respect. I mean we all learn things from lots of people and sometimes we don’t know how much until we really stop to think about.
I think that both Rich and Grace grew up and became man and woman together. Grace started to wear more revealing clothing embracing her sexuality which often happens when you are in love. She started to let her hair down and stopped being so proper, because she didn’t feel as pressured by her father. She was able to be who she wanted to be and dress how she felt. Like a sexy woman in love. She is more willing to say what she thinks confronting her Dad. Also in 6x1 Grace confronted Franky about her behavior. I don’t think that the Grace in 5x1 would have done that. I think she was also more confident in her role as group mediator than ever before. She became a sexy, sassy, kind, and genuinely awesome woman.
Rich learned to accept people. I think he learned that who he is…is not what he wears it’s his core values. So people can complain about his clothes all they want but the moment I knew that Rich was a man. A FULL FLEDGED MAN was when he learned that Grace died and he chose to comfort a man who has treated him like shit since the very beginning. Who kept him away from Grace when she was ill. But he comforted him and told him he was being a good Dad. He has learned to think outside of himself and he has learned to get out of his moods. I think he has also learned to show affection to people. He also got drive and purpose. Studying trying to get into Cambridge. He became a man.
That’s why Rich and Grace to me is amazing. They had such a positive and mature relationship. It showed in both their relationship and their individual transformations.
Under the cut I will examine the friendship of Rich and Liv. I will explain why I feel that this friendship is a sleeper awesome friendship by examining Series 5, Series 6, and the Locked-In extras.
